 And The Sky Was Clean

And The Sky Was Clean

“And the Sky Was Clean” is a compelling story; beautifully written about life on the windswept shores of a small southern town on the Gulf of Mexico; Long Beach, Mississippi. It was the summer of ’69 that a monster was lurking in the Atlantic Ocean, biding her time and growing like a fast spreading cancer. Her name was Camille. She would be dubbed “the storm of a lifetime”; devastating the entire Gulf Coast and a way of life beloved by all.The Gervais’ family, like so much of the Coast, is a melting pot of cultures. Gene, the patriarch hailed from the beautiful land of lakes in far off St. Paul Minnesota. He met married Ida, a daughter of the south, whose roots run deep in the Mississippi mud after World War II while stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in the nearby town of Biloxi. Later, their youngest, Cathy would fall in love with a handsome young Biloxi boy by the name of Ricky Suarez who’s Cajun French and Spanish ancestry is forever linked with the sea and all her bounty. While the south endured times of civil unrest and the Vietnam War, it also was forced to suffer through Camille, a level five catastrophic hurricane on a hot August night in 1969; who forever changed the standard of measurement for all other storms that rolled ashore thereafter. Then in 2005, the storm of all storms: hurricane Katrina made Camille look as though it were a mere warm up performance for the main act. It’s been said that hurricane Camille killed more people in 2005 than she did in 1969, due to the local attitudes that espoused her as the icon of all storms, the tempest that would surely never come to pass again! As New Orleans took center stage in the national news, the fact that Mississippi bore the brunt of Katrina’s wrath was lost to a nation glued to events unfolding in the Crescent City. Countless small villages and communities across Mississippi were plunged into darkness, cut off from the rest of the world; struggling to survive the elements!Life and the

“Cancer Informatics: Essential Technologies for Clinical Trials” describes the National Cancer Institute’s vision of a Cancer Informatics Infastructure (CII). By exploring the best that the Internet and information technology have to offer, the CII will facilitate clinical trials, for all who are involved, including the patient along with the Myriad of health professionals involved in cancer trials. To bridge the chasm between discoveries and best clinical practices, the editors describe CII and how it can function to expedite the clinical trial life cycle, facilitate faster and safer drug development, and make more appropriate treatment choices available to cancer patients. Presented in four comprehensive sections editied by leading experts, the book highlights: – E-commerce – Digital Libraries – Standards development – Public health informatics – Common data elements (CDEs) – Clinical trials information systems – Consumer education and support “Cancer Informatics: Essential Technologies for Clinical Trials” is and indispensable guide to clinical trials. Clinical Cancer Genetics: Risk Counseling and Management

$149.95

With a Foreword by Richard D. Klausner, M.D., Director, National Cancer Institute and an Introduction by Henry T. Lynch, M.D., President, Hereditary Cancer Institute and Director, Creighton Cancer Center, Creighton University. When ordering a genetic test to determine whether a patient is susceptible to genetically transmitted cancers, physicians must be prepared to cope with profound medical, psychological, and ethical consequences. They, along with genetic counselors, nurses, psychologists, and other health professionals, must ensure that interpretations of test results are accurate, risk assessments are appropriate, and the communication of risk information is clear, helpful, and productive. Clinical Cancer Genetics: Risk Counseling and Management is a comprehensive practical guide for health professionals responding to the growing demand for clinical cancer genetic services. Using examples drawn from actual cases and emphasizing fundamental principles throughout, this book outlines the scope of clinical cancer genetics and its underlying scientific concepts, reviews the most prevalent syndromes of cancer predisposition, and addresses major issues associated with genetic testing, including: Use of quantitative methods in risk counseling Methodologies of genetic testing Genetic testing of patients with cancer Reproductive risk counseling of cancer patients Special psychological, ethical, and legal challenges in clinical cancer genetics Supplemented with practical materials used in cancer genetic counseling programs and an annotated table of selected human cancer predisposition syndromes, Clinical Cancer Genetics: Risk Counseling and Management equips health care professionalswith a complete understanding of the benefits and limitations of genetic testing technologies and the ability to integrate genetic information into the management of patients who are at risk or already affected by cancer.

Costs of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses

Costs of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses

$56.05

As the debate over health care reform continues, costs have become a critical measure in the many plans and proposals to come before us. Knowing costs is important because it allows comparisons across such disparate health conditions as AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and cancer. This book presents the results of a major study estimating the large and largely overlooked costs of occupational injury and illness–costs as large as those for cancer and over four times the costs of AIDS.The incidence and mortality of occupational injury and illness were assessed by reviewing data from national surveys and applied an attributable-risk-proportion method. Costs were assessed using the human capital method that decomposes costs into direct categories such as medical costs and insurance administration expenses, as well as indirect categories such as lost earnings and lost fringe benefits. The total is estimated to be $155 billion and is likely to be low as it does not include costs associated with pain and suffering or of home care provided by family members.Invaluable as an aid in the analysis of policy issues, Costs of Occupational Injury and Illness will serve as a resource and reference for economists, policy analysts, public health researchers, insurance administrators, labor unions and labor lawyers, benefits managers, and environmental scientists, among others.J. Paul Leigh is Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, University of California, Davis. Stephen Markowitz, M.D., is Professor in the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine, City University of New York Medical School. Marianne Fahs is Director ofthe Health Policy Research Center, Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy, New School University. Discovering the Center: A Surgeon's Spiritual Journey

Discovering the Center: A Surgeon’s Spiritual Journey

$1.5

The author, surgeon, professor, and former member of the National Cancer Commission, Dr. Edward Gray, tells of the conversion experience, the profound, inexpressibly joyous awareness of God’s presence, that deepened his faith and transformed him in the process. Recounting his life as husband, father, friend and surgeon, Dr. Gray finds that after the conversion experience, he is more patient and peaceful with family and friends, and in his surgical practice. Recounting his patients’ lives, he writes of persons for whom there was little hope who recovered or extended their lives through their strong faith and serene acceptance of God’s will. Dr. Gray describes his practice of meditation, Centering Prayer, the prayer of “consenting to the Holy Spirit,” of attendance of daily Mass, and reception of Holy Communion. This work adds to the growing body of evidence that attests to a connection, however mysterious and beyond intellectual understanding, between science and religion. It is written with sensitivity and great depth of feeling in the tradition of Kübler-Ross, Benson, Keating, and McGinn, and should comfort and encourage physicians and patients alike.

From Stage IV to Center Stage is a story of extraordinary courage, strength, and deep spirituality. Denise DeSimone”s journey began the moment she opened her eyes in a post-op ward after a routine biopsy to determine the pathology of the lump on her neck and was told that she had cancer. Given three months to live because of stage IV throat and neck cancer, to singing the National Anthem before a Red Sox game at Fenway Park in Boston, to riding her bicycle eighty-five miles in one day to raise money for children”s cancer research with the Pan Mass Challenge, all in less than two years, is proof that the unexpected can be achieved. Denise named cancer PIN -short for pain in the neck-and entered into a dialogue with PIN and learned rich and enlightening lessons. Denise learned that self-love is the all-time greatest healer.

 Molecular and Cellular Signaling

Molecular and Cellular Signaling

$99.98

A small number of signaling pathways, no more than a dozen or so, form a control layer that is responsible for all signaling in and between cells of the human body. The signaling proteins belonging to the control layer determine what kinds of cells are made during development and how they function during adult life. Malfunctions in the proteins belonging to the control layer are responsible for a host of human diseases ranging from neurological disorders to cancers. Most drugs target components in the control layer, and difficulties in drug design are intimately related to the architecture of the control layer.Molecular and Cellular Signaling provides an introduction to molecular and cellular signaling in biological systems with an emphasis on the underlying physical principles. The text is aimed at upper-level undergraduates, graduate students and individuals in medicine and pharmacology interested in broadening their understanding of how cells regulate and coordinate their core activities and how diseases arise when these regulatory systems malfunction, as well as those in chemistry, physics and computer science interested in pursuing careers in biological and medical physics, bioinformatics and systems biology. To that end, the book includes background information and review sections, and chapters on signaling in the immune, endocrine (hormonal) and nervous systems. It has chapters on cancer, apoptosis and gene regulation, and contains chapters on bacteria and viruses. In those chapters not specifically devoted to pathogens, connections between diseases, drugs and signaling are made. Each chapter also features a problem set to facilitate further discussion and understanding.About the Author:Martin Beckerman, Ph.D. is Senior Scientist at the Center forMartin Beckerman, PhD, is a senior research scientist at the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN. Never did I imagine I would find a cure for migraine, a debilitating disease which, according to the National Headache Foundation, affects approximately 28 million Americans But I did. Until now, migraine has appeared to be impossible to cure. But its not impossible anymore.from the introduction by Sergey Dzugan, MD, PhDWhile Dr. Dzugan and Dr. R. Arnold Smith were working with cancer patients at the North Central Mississippi Regional Cancer Center they made a startling discovery When cancer patients were treated with immunorestorationa treatment that includes the use of hormones to help boost the immune systempatients who had once suffered with migraines reported that suddenly they were migraine-free. Why were these patients suddenly free of migraine and its many related symptoms, including fatigue, insomnia, depression, and constipation? Could restoration of specific, foundational hormones be the basis of a migraine cure? From this discovery, Dr. Dzugan developed the Migraine Cure treatment protocol out of a long-term clinical study in which all the patients100 percentgot complete relief from migraine pain and related symptoms, including individuals who were difficult-to-treat.

When Healing Becomes a Crime: The Amazing Story of the Hoxsey Cancer Clinics and the Return of Alternative Therapies

$19.95

A powerful and substantiated expose of the medical politics that prevents promising alternative cancer therapies from being implemented in the United States– Focuses on Harry Hoxsey, the subject of the author’s award-winning documentary, who claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies– Presents scientific evidence supporting Hoxsey’s cancer-fighting claims– Published to coincide with the public release of the National Institutes of Health report on the efficacy of Hoxsey’s remediesHarry Hoxsey claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies, and thousands of patients swore that he cured them. But medical authorities branded him a quack and relentlessly hounded him until his Texas clinic was driven to Tijuana, Mexico, in the early 1960s. Since that time, laboratory tests have shown Hoxsey’s herbs to have documented anticancer properties. In 1997, the federal government’s Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine began a historic preliminary review of Hoxsey’s patient records with their findings scheduled for release in the spring of 2000.When Healing Becomes a Crime exposes the overall failure of the War on Cancer and reveals how yesterday’s quackery is emerging as the leading edge of tomorrow’s medicine. As alternative medicine finally regains its rightful place and enters mainstream practice, this compelling book will not only forever change the way you see medicine but could also save your life.
